It's Official: Historic Duke Mansion Will Be Demolished

Historic Preservation Commission votes unanimously to memorialize resolution, report says.

Hillsborough Township’s Historical Preservation Commission made it official Thursday night, memorializing the resolution that approves the demolition of the Duke Farm mansion.

The commission voted unanimously to go ahead with the resolution, nj.com reported, despite residents who opposed the plan. Members of the group DORIS (Demolition of Residence is Senseless) will continue to fight the plan and are seeking a 6-month moratorium on razing the building.

A decision on whether the township committee can grant the stay will be made available at the governing body’s next meeting, the report said.

The Historical Preservation Commission now needs to apply for a demolition permit from the building department, and is expecting the work to be conducted in 2016.

The mansion was home to heiress Doris Duke and was constructed in 1893.
