Sierra Club Opposes Open Space Referendum

The Republicans in Hillsborough put out another mailer this weekend with the same quote out of context. They are at it again even after the New Jersey Sierra Club complained and talked to them they are still putting out this false statement.

The Sierra Club opposes this ballot question of taking open space money for other purposes. The original quote was about a state wide sales tax from existing revenue and had nothing to do with a local open space trust fund.

The fact that they have to go to lies and distort a quote shows that they are wrong. There are still plenty of important environmentally sensitive properties in Hillsborough to be acquired. This diversion will hurt those efforts by promoting sprawl and over development, which will lead to higher taxes, trafficking, and flooding.

If they can deliberately lie and mislead on a piece of mail they should not be trusted with open space monies. The people of Hillsborough deserve better and should be working to preserve open space and improve their quality of life.

We are calling on all environmental groups to denounce this dirty trick.

We urge the people ofHillsborough to vote NO against these dirty tricks and for open space. As Ronald Regan has said, "There they go again.”
Jeff Tittel,
Director of the New Jersey Sierra Club
