Traffic Alert: Millstone Causeway Now Open

The NJDOT has re-opened the Millstone Causeway to traffic.

Hillsborough Township Police and Township Mayor Doug Tomson have alerted residents that the Millstone Causeway is now open to traffic.

Police officially announced the County Route 514/Amwell Road Bridge in Franklin Township, which crosses the Delaware and Raritan Canal, re-opened on Wednesday afternoon.

The bridge was closed by the New Jersey Department of Transportation on Jan. 16 after an inspection found excessive stress on the structure from overweight vehicles, which required immediate action, the NJDOT said.

“The closure of this bridge was part of the New Jersey Department of Transportation’s commitment to ensuring all of our bridges and roads are safe for motorists,” NJDOT Commissioner Jamie Fox said in a release from the DOT. “Leaving a bridge in this condition open is a risk that NJDOT is not willing to take.”

The bridge’s deck and substructure were repaired and reinforced, stiffening the bridge and addressing the excessive flexing inspectors noticed in January. The DOT said the work done is meant as an temporary solution until the entire bridge can be replaced.
