Hopatcong Schools Reopening Next Week After Mold Concerns

The school will open eight days later than originally planned.

HOPATCONG, NJ — Hopatcong Schools will open for the year on Sept. 18, eight school days after they first intended to open. Mold in two schools pushed back the opening of the three-school district.

School was expected to open on Sept. 6, but mold in Hudson Maxim Elementary School and Tulsa Trail Elementary School pushed it back. Officials had hoped to open by Sept. 10, a goal that came and went.

All the schools have been cleaned, and the schools are in the process of being retested, the acting superintendent, Dr. Joanne Mullane, said.

"During the past several days, community members, HEPTO, and the Lafayette School District reached out to the district to see how they could help us. We are so appreciative of this!" Mullane wrote in a letter to parents. "We are a strong community, we have been through difficult times before, we have worked together, and we will get through this. We are in the home stretch of the mold remediation in our district. I hope this is the last message on mold remediation."

The calendar will be reworked once schools open for the year, Mullane said.
