HOPATCONG, NJ — Voters in Hopatcong and Sparta elected council and Board of Education members during Tuesday's general election. All elections are contested. Here are the unofficial results.

Hopatcong

Three candidates, two Republicans and one independent, are running for two open seats on the Borough Council (no Democrats are on the ballot). The unofficial vote tallies, with projected winners in bold, are:

  • Dawn Roberts (REP) 3,719
  • Ryan Smith (REP) 3,447
  • Mara Modes (Your Vote Matters) 1,660

Five candidates ran for three open seats for the Board of Education. The Board of Education is dealing with layoffs stemming from a major loss of state funding, amid a decline in enrollment, and will have to hire a new superintendent after the intern superintendent resigned suddenly.

  • Philip DiStefano 2,173
  • Candice Smith 3,096
  • Jacqueline Turkington 2,232
  • Michele A. Perrotti 2,411

DiStefano, Trumpore, and Smith are all incumbents.

Sparta

Four candidates ran for three open seats on the township council. The unofficial election results, with projected winners in bold, are:

  • David F. Smith (OCC) 5,443
  • Daniel M. Chiariello (OYS) 5,182
  • John H. Finkeldie (OTV) 4,988
  • Molly Whilesmith (FIS) 5,196

Whilesmith is the only incumbent.

Six candidates are running for three open seats on the Sparta Board of Education. The unofficial election results, with projected winners in bold, are:

  • Karen Scott 4,982
  • Kathryn Matteson 3,871
  • Jennifer Grana 4,052
  • Christian Arnold 3,548
  • Vanessa Serrano 3,305
  • Jennifer Hamilton 2,016

Scott and Hamilton are the two incumbents.
