What exactly is a fishing derby, one might ask? According to Mississippi State University Extension's website, it's, before anything else, an excuse to go fishing and also an event where people gather for fishing-related activities including educational ones.
"Unlike a tournament or fishing rodeo, where the emphasis is usually on competition and profit, a fishing derby places emphasis on the individual participants and their exposure to fisheries resources and the sport of fishing," it says.
