Jefferson Township Lien Sale Thursday

The township will hold a tax lien property sale Oct. 17.

Jefferson Township plans a tax lien sale this week for properties on which taxes, utilities and other municipal fees were not paid in prior years, according to Tax Collector Patricia Dale.

The sale is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Jefferson Township Municipal Building's Council Chambers, 1033 Weldon Road in Lake Hopatcong. The list of properties to be sold indicated that the land for sale is subject to redemption at the lowest rate of interest, which will not exceed an annual 18 percent.

Anyone wishing to participate must make full payment in the form of cash, money order, certified check or bank check prior to the conclusion of the sale. The price paid will include the amount due as advertised plus interest and cost incurred up to the time of payment whereupon the impending sale thereof will be cancelled.

Prospective buyers should know that industrial properties may be subject to the state Spill Compensation and Control Act, the Water Pollution Control Act and the Industrial Site Recovery Act. In addition, the municipality can not issue a tax sale certificate to anyone who is or has any connection to the prior owner or operator of the site.

If the current owner of a property on the list to be sold is on active duty with the U.S. military or has served actively within the last six months, the tax collector should be notified immediately, according to a notice on the municipal website.

The list of properties for sale and the names of people who have been assessed as their owners can be found on that website.
