2 Dachshunds Left Near Light Rail Train In Hudson County. Are They Yours?
Two Dachshunds were left by a train station in Hudson County. The Humane Society urged owners to reach out if they need to give up a pet.

HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — Are you missing two female Dachshunds with decorative collars, or do you know someone who is?
The dogs were left near the Hudson-Bergen Light Trail train in Weehawken over the weekend, said an officer with the Humane Society in New Jersey.
The group is looking for the owner, intending to find out what happened.

"These two girls were tied up and dumped by the light rail in Weehawken," the group posted on social media Saturday. "If anyone recognizes the dogs please let us know. All dms and calls [are] confidential."
Geoffrey Santini, a humane officer at the shelter, based in West New York, told Patch on Tuesday that they have a lead on an owner and are hoping to find out why the dogs were left.

"The dogs were barking and whelping as the owner jumped on the train," he said. "We may ask for a surrender."
If the owner does decide to surrender to the dogs, the group can adopt them out.
Will Work With You
Santini said the owner will not be in trouble. "We don't know the mindset," he said.
Santini urged people who have to give up their animals to talk to a humane group, shelter, or police, rather than leaving the animal somewhere, for a number of reasons.
"Instead of dumping an animal, surrender the animals so the society knows the name, the age, vaccinations," Santini said. "It's better to try to surrender the animals. Any kind of humane shelter will work with you."
He added, "Anyone having mental health issues, problems, if they're going into the hospital for a couple days, we will work with them. Don't leave your dogs behind...it's inhumane and there's always a place or rescue that will want to help you. There's help, but you have to ask for it."
He added, "You leave them at the light rail, we don't want to think of 'what if,' but what if the dogs jumped on the railroad tracks?"
There have been cases in New Jersey and across the country in which an owner left a pet with a heartbreaking note saying they couldn't take care of the animal any longer. In some cases, a shelter has located the owner and helped them continue to care for their pet.
He said his shelter has contracts with five local towns, and will soon run a low-cost spray and neuter clinic.
The Society also posted on Saturday about a Labrador that was found near 73rd St. in North Bergen. See that dog here.
