JERSEY CITY, NJ - Panic ensued at a July 4th celebration near the waterfront in Jersey City over the holiday weekend after large crowds of people rushed to find exits in a stampede-like situation.

According to NJ Advance Media, large crowds of people rushed to find exits in a chaotic scene that left multiple people injured. While the fireworks were ringing out near the Exchange Place PATH station, hoards of people began running to exit, according to social media reports and NJ Advance Media.

As of Monday morning, there is no official word from authorities on what caused the chaos to break out.

One father there with his daughter recounts his horrifying experience, when a handful of police officers rushing by told everyone to "take cover" and said he "waited to get shot."

"My first fear was falling and getting stomped on with my son by hundreds of terrified people. I’m in tears writing this. My son went to sleep crying telling me he thought he was going to heaven because he thought he was going to die. I tried to be a good mother and take my son out to view the beautiful fireworks and I ended up traumatizing my son. He never wants to celebrate the 4th of July. This is heartbreaking.
