📰 News we're reading

1. Golden Door Charter School Named National ESEA Distinguished School (hudpost.com) — A Jersey City charter school just earned one of the nation’s top honors for effectively serving students with federal education funding. Golden Door Charter School was named a National ESEA Distinguished School, the only public school in New Jersey to receive the award this year, highlighting its success with a diverse, largely economically disadvantaged student body.

2. NJ TRANSIT board of directors authorizes design and engineering of Secaucus to Jersey City segment of key project (busride.com) — NJ Transit has approved more than $22 million to design the Secaucus-to-Jersey City segment of the Secaucus-Meadowlands Transitway, creating a new transit corridor through one of North Jersey’s densest areas. The project will reuse the former Boonton rail line and Bergen Arches, aiming for zero-emission, potentially autonomous vehicles to link Jersey City with Secaucus Junction and the Meadowlands Sports and Entertainment Complex.

3. 2 Neighborhood Bloods gang members convicted of killing pregnant woman, 2 others, feds say (nj.com subscription) — A federal jury has convicted two Jersey City men tied to the Neighborhood Bloods for a 2017 triple homicide inside a Jersey City apartment, including the killing of a pregnant woman. Prosecutors say the pair carefully planned the attack, using a stolen truck and radios, and now face potential life sentences when they return to court in April.

4. Growth stalls in NJ school choice program allowing interdistrict transfers (nj.com subscription) — Jersey City Public Schools are among the top senders of students in New Jersey’s interdistrict school choice program, with 134 students attending schools elsewhere in 2024. The statewide program has stalled at about 5,000 students due to funding caps, raising questions about equity, desegregation, and how districts like Jersey City can use or expand these options.

5. Secaucus Police Blotter, Dec. 15 - Dec. 21 (patch.com) — Secaucus police reported several recent arrests that involve Jersey City residents, including two men picked up on outstanding Jersey City warrants and another accused of shoplifting and drug offenses. While the incidents occurred in Secaucus, the cases may affect Jersey City neighbors who have ties to those charged or are following regional public safety trends.
