Jersey City Mayor's Race Set: Election 2025
As the filing deadline to run for Jersey City mayor neared, current Mayor Fulop made an announcement Thursday.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Several council members and even a former New Jersey governor have announced they will run for mayor of Jersey City.
This year, Mayor Steve Fulop had said he would not seek another term, instead opting to run for governor. But he lost the Democratic nomination to Rep. Mike Sherrill.
On Thursday, Fulop posted on social media, "Today’s the deadline to file for Mayor/Council in Jersey City and I won’t be filing. It’s a weird feeling. When I ran for Governor, I said I wouldn’t treat the mayor’s seat or an elected office as a fallback, and I meant it."

He added, "I think it reflects poorly when people do that + wouldn’t do that to JC. The next chapter of leadership for Jersey City clearly starts today + I’m excited to see what vision the candidates will bring."
Former New Jersey Gov. Jim McGreevey is running for the top spot, as are County Commissioner Bill O'Dea, council members James Solomon and Joyce Watterman, and former school board president Mussab Ali.

Last week, the New York Post said that a poll showed Solomon and McGreevey in the lead.
The municipal election will take place on Nov. 4.
