Jersey City Man Charged In Teen's Death Will Get New Trial: Report

A Jersey City man, sentenced to 55 years for a teen's death, will get a new trial after he was improperly identified, a report says.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — A Jersey City man who was sentenced for killing an Elizabeth teen will get a new trial after an appeal showed he was improperly identified, NJ.com reported.

Anthony Reciofigeroa of Jersey City was sentenced in 2022 to 55 years in prison in connection with the 2019 shooting death of Carlos Rodriguez, 19, the outlet reported. During the trial, a detective showed more than 50 surveillance videos of a car near the scene, NJ.com wrote. Recifigeroa was apprehended after law enforcement said his car matched a witness's description, but during the trial, a detective "described events on video that she had no firsthand knowledge of, improperly identified the car’s path of travel, and improperly identified the defendant in the video when she had no proof that it was him," the outlet said.

The appellate court determined that he was improperly identified, the report said. Read more on NJ.com.
