Jersey City Medical Center Unveils New Neuro Interventional Cath Lab

Jersey City Medical Center, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, today announced it will utilize new, state-of-the-art medical technology that enables physicians to view detailed 3D submillimeter images of the brain and nervous system through the use of an innovative angiographic X-ray lab. The new Neuro Interventional Cath Lab will enhance the diagnosis and treatment of stroke and complex neurovascular diseases such as aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) among Hudson County residents.

With this addition, the Medical Center will be the only facility in Hudson County providing full time open and endovascular neurosurgical care of complex neurovascular pathology. The Medical Center will now be able to perform minimally invasive procedures on the new system to treat a wide range of clinical problems including stroke, carotid artery disease, cerebral aneurysms, and AVMs. According to the American Stroke Association, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds, and stroke is a leading cause of serious long-term disability among Americans.

The catheter-based procedures are designed to reduce some of the risks and recovery time found in traditional surgical approaches. Among the many benefits of catheter-based interventions are shorter hospital stays, reduced recovery time without the pain of a large incision, and most importantly, avoiding trauma to the brain and spine seen in traditional surgery while providing effective treatment. The lab’s innovations and imaging capabilities will help clinicians treat patients efficiently and provide superior care.
