JERSEY CITY, NJ —Jersey City resident Alicia Olatuja will give a new voice to 60 years of female artists at Flushing Town Hall this Saturday night. In advance of her live concert, she shared a few of her favorite Jersey City things.

Olatuja's show, Intuition: From the Minds of Women, will celebrate the achievements of a long list of female composers and draws from her 2019 sophomore album of the same name.

Olatuja — who has lived in Jersey City for five years — said, "I moved from Brooklyn in search of a home and neighborhood that felt more family friendly and honest. Also, Jersey City Heights is one of the most diverse cities in America with a lot of artists, family owned businesses and young families. The energy is vibrant but not overally hurried and stressed like it can get sometimes in NYC."

She added, "Jersey City is also a foodie town where I can find beautiful restaurants." She said her husband loves the Argentinian bakery nearby, and they both enjoy live music at Fox & Crow.

Olatuja will be sharing her own live music from Flushing on Saturday — singing the songs of Sade, Tracy Chapman, Kate Bush, Linda Creed, Angela Bofill, Brenda Russell, and more.

Olatuja first came into the national spotlight in 2013 while performing as the featured soloist with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir at President Barack Obama’s Second Inauguration. Shortly thereafter, she assembled her own jazz-based ensemble and recorded her first solo album, Timeless (2014).

Originally from St. Louis, Missouri, she grew up immersed in a wide range of musical styles, including gospel, soul, jazz and classical, all of which have informed her artistic journey. After appearing in numerous operatic and musical theater productions, she started to perform more regularly.

You can catch a glimpse of Olatuja's vocals here.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. show can be purchased here ($15/$12 members). But the concert will also be streamed live for free on Flushing Town Hall's YouTube Channel. (RSVP HERE to receive the streaming link and reminder email).
