Man Shot To Death By Jersey City Police Identified

The man was shot by a sergeant Sept. 5, police said.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — A man killed by police on Sept. 5 has been identified.

Steven B. Sanchez, 26, of Jersey City, was shot by Jersey City Police Sgt. Ricardo Reyes, according to the Attorney General's Office.

Reyes and other Jersey City officers got out of their patrol cars by Sanchez on the sidewalk of John F. Kennedy Boulevard, near the intersection of Clinton Avenue, officials said.

"During the ensuing encounter, Sgt. Reyes exchanged fire with Mr. Sanchez, who was struck and injured," officials said.

Authorities recovered a compressed air pistol at the scene.

Sanchez was taken to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:45 p.m., officials said.

Reyes sustained a non-life-threatening injury, they said.

Earlier, city public safety spokeswoman Kim Wallace-Scalcione said that just before 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 5, two marked police cars came under fire while heading southbound on John F. Kennedy Boulevard near Clinton Avenue.

An armed male shooter fired "multiple rounds," striking both cars, she said.
