Calling All Bookworms! Annual Library Sale Begins Wednesday

The Friends of the Lacey Library estimates between 2,000 and 3,000 books have been donated for their annual book and media sale, which will also include magazines, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs and more

Today is the last day to donate books and media to the Friends of the Lacey Library Annual Books and Media Sale, which will kickoff Wednesday, May 9.

“We’re seeing this as a service to the community to make sure people keep coming,” said Ellie Greco, President of the Friends Organization.

As Greco stood in the doorway of the meeting room where the sale will be held in the Lacey Library, her eyes scanned thousands of donations. The group estimates between 2,000 to 3,000 books.

Friends of the Lacey Library have been running book sales since 1974 but they have grown over the years. The book sale became a weeklong event in 1994.

A variety of books—hardcover and paperback—have been donated as well as VHS tapes, DVDs, CDs, puzzles and computer games.

Books are separated by categories, for example: cooking and diet, health and medical, psychology, self-help, math, business, crafts, technology, science, pets and animals, world history, biography, literature, science fiction and children's.

“Our prices are outstanding. We haven’t raised prices at all,” Greco said. Hardcover books are 50 cents while paperbacks are 25 cents and VHS tapes are 25 cents for one or six for one dollar.

The money raised from the book sale goes to Friends of the Lacey Library for programs, which encourage the public’s use of the library. Main events held by the volunteer organization included lectures, educational programs, cultural events, and trips.

Eventually the money raised from the book sale makes it way back to the library for their programs, Greco said. The librarians will make suggestions and tell the nonprofit organization where there is a need in particular.

“Our Friends of Library group as a whole works towards doing anything we can to enhance the library or library programs,” she said. “This is our main fundraiser this year. The more we make, the more we can put back in the community.”

Although most of the books get sold, Friends of Lacey Library has been working with a bookman from Jackson over the last few years who sends the leftovers overseas to help those learning English or recycles them, Greco said.

The Friends organization and volunteers are currently working to organize the donations and prepare for the sale. Donations can be made up until 9 p.m. on Tuesday evening.

The sale will be on Wednesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
