Lacey Police Report 2 Cases Of Fraud This Week

The cases involved an email hacker and counterfeit checks cashed from a Lanoka Harbor business owner's account.

LACEY, NJ — Lacey police reported two cases of fraud this week. The incidents involved an email hacker and counterfeit checks cashed from a Lanoka Harbor business owner's account.

One victim told police Tuesday that someone sent an email from her account telling people that a mutual friend was diagnosed with cancer. The hacker asked each friend to purchase gift cards to help the victim with her finances.

Two victims purchased Target gift cards in an attempt to help. One card’s information was turned over before it was determined to be a scam. The purchase totaled $600.

In a separate case on Jan. 15, a Lanoka Harbor business owner told police that he noticed fraudulent activity in his checking account. The victim said someone cashed two counterfeit checks against his account. The loss totaled $4,959.
