12-Year-Old Dies After Tree Falls On Him In Backyard In Lawrence

Gusty winds caused the tree to fall on the boy, who was playing in the backyard, Lawrence Police Chief said.

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – A 12-year-old boy was killed after a tree fell on him while he was playing in the backyard, Lawrence Police Chief Chris Longo said.

The boy was playing with a friend in the backyard just after noon Monday when the tree was blown over by gusty winds, striking the boy and causing fatal injuries, Longo said.

Responding officers were able to free the boy from under the fallen tree and begin CPR. He was taken to Capital Health System – Regional Medical Center by Lawrence Township EMS, where he later succumbed to his injuries, Longo said.

The Lawrence Township School District will have counselors available this week to assist students and staff.

In addition, therapy dogs and members of the Mercer County Traumatic Loss Coalition will be on school grounds to provide assistance.

The incident is being investigated by Lawrence Township Detective A. Tara and Mercer County Homicide Task Force Detective P. Way.
