Maya R. Therattil, MD, FAAPMR, a physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) specialist at Lawrence Rehabilitation Hospital in Lawrence Twp., has been honored by the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) with a “2025 Distinguished Member Award.” The stand-out physician this fall accepted the honor at AAPM&R’s Annual Assembly in Salt Lake City.

In addition to her role at Lawrence Rehab Hospital, Dr. Therattil is chair of the Department of PM&R at Penn Medicine Princeton Health. She also is the PM&R Pathway Director at Drexel University’s College of Medicine.

“Dr. Therattil – time and again – has demonstrated excellence in clinical care and provided invaluable leadership in advancing the PM&R specialty; she is well deserving of this recognition,” said Christina Albano, regional director of market development for Marquis Health Consulting Services, which supports Lawrence. “The teams at Lawrence and Marquis congratulate Dr. Therattil on this prestigious honor.”

PM&R physicians, also known as physiatrists, treat a wide variety of medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and tendons. They evaluate and treat injuries, illnesses and disability, and are experts in designing comprehensive, patient-centered treatment plans to maximize function and quality of life. “AAPM&R’s annual awards recognized the nation’s best and brightest clinicians, researchers and advocates for their contribution to the physical medicine and rehabilitation specialty and leadership in the Academy,” said Dr. Charlotte H. Smith, vice president of the AAPM&R Board of Governors and chair of the 2025 Awards Committee. The AAPM&R is the national medical specialty organization representing more than 10,000 physiatrists; established in 1994, its “Distinguished Member Award” honors up to three members a year.
