Lawrence Township Public Schools recently released the following news items:
Free and Reduced Lunch Applications Available
Free and Reduced Lunch program applications are available now. They are available via the school district website (www.LTPS.org), in the administration building at 2565 Princeton Pike, or online by clicking here. If you believe your student(s) is eligible for the lunch program, a new application must be filled out every school year. Remember to fill out ONE application per household. On the form include all relatives and non-relatives living in the household along with their gross income. Submit the application to the attention of Peggy Fenerty, Lawrence Township Public Schools, 2565 Princeton Pike, Lawrenceville, N.J. 08648. Anyone with questions can call (609) 671-5435.

Student Receives Young Heroes Award
Kayla Jackson, a rising sixth-grader, recently received a Young Heroes Award from the National Liberty Museum and TD Bank. Fifth-grade teacher Carole Petrone nominated Kayla for her Second Annual Blanket Drive, an event Kayla organized to collect new and gently-used blankets for those in need. She collected and donated over 600 blankets this past winter – double the yield of her first drive. Kayla attended a luncheon/ceremony last week, where she received a Young Heroes medal, certificate and several mementos. Her picture will appear in the National Liberty Museum's exhibit where the story of young heroes' accomplishments will be seen by over 60,000 visitors each year.

Lawrence High School Student Selected as NJFEA Student Officer
Nicole Tunnard, a rising junior at Lawrence High School, has been selected as a New Jersey Future Educators Association (NJFEA) student officer for the 2011-2012 school year. Nicole participated in officer leadership training at The College of New Jersey and was chosen to be a representative for our area.
Science and Engineering Program for Teachers
Twenty-seven teachers from all over the world – including Chiara Shah and Larry Rush from Lawrence High School’s new Science and Technology Academy – attended this year’s Science and Engineering Program for Teachers (SEPT), which was held June 26 through July 2 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In attendance were teachers from Germany, Argentina, India, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Ohio, Hawaii, Washington, Florida, Texas, New Jersey, Delaware and Colorado.
The teachers were exposed to workshops and lectures in fields ranging from Computer Science, Physics, Biology, Engineering and Technology. Some of the highlights from the week included a lecture from the inventor of a Google App, Hal Abelson; an interactive Biology workshop with Kathy Vandiver in the MIT Museum; and an introduction to the StarLogo computer program.
Lawrence Intermediate School Teachers Participate in QUEST
From July 5-15, Lawrence Intermediate School teachers Jessica Glover, Jessica Heller, and Joanne Koellner participated in the QUEST Summer Institute, a professional development program taught by Princeton faculty and scientists from neighboring institutions on the Princeton University campus.
Lawrence High School Teachers Learn at CONNECT-ED
Lawrence High School teachers Kristin Miller and Breanna Bever participated in the Consortium for New Explorations in Coherent Teacher Education (CONNECT-ED) at Rider University this summer. At the program teachers learn the “big ideas” in science and math and how to use data and make sense out of it.
