School Board Fires Teacher Who Was Convicted in Pa.

The Lawrence Township Board of Education Monday evening officially fired David Kelly, the former Lawrence Middle School music teacher who was convicted of simple assault and other charges for firing a rifle in the direction of two teenagers.

Members of the Lawrence Township Board of Education, during their meeting last night (Feb. 13), officially terminated the employment of David Kelly, effective Feb. 3.

Kelly had been suspended with pay from his job in the district ever since he was who were walking across his property in Northampton Township.

Kelly, who was 43 at the time of the arrest, taught seventh- and eighth-grade music and served as orchestra director at Lawrence Middle School.

In January, following a brief trial, a Bucks County jury ruled that Kelly accidentally fired the rifle while trying to scare the trespassing teens, according to the Bucks County Courier Times, which reported that the jury found Kelly not guilty of terroristic threats but convicted him of simple assault, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and possession of an instrument of crime.

Following his conviction in Pennsylvania, according to Lawrence Township school board officials, the New Jersey Department of Education reviewed the case and ruled that Kelly is now permanently disqualified from employment in New Jersey public schools.
