Friday Commute: Freezing Rain This Afternoon In Bergen

Freezing rain may make travel difficult in Bergen County on Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Freezing rain may make travel difficult in Bergen County on Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

The NWS issued a special weather statement Friday afternoon, warning that the precipitation "may coat roadways with a thin layer of ice that may be undetectable."

The statement continues, "Please use extreme caution, especially on bridges, overpasses and around curves. Allow plenty of stopping distance and avoid braking suddenly."

A winter weather advisory for Bergen County is still in effect from 6 a.m. - 7 p.m. Friday.

The advisory originally expired at 6 p.m. On Thursday afternoon, the NWS decided to extend the advisory an hour.

Snow and ice are expected Friday, which can make roads slippery and commuting difficult both in the morning and evening. Parts of Bergen County may see less than an inch of snow and less than a quarter-inch of ice, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm should move through northern Jersey late Friday afternoon into Friday evening.

The advisory originally expired at 6 p.m., and the NWS decided on Thursday afternoon to extend the advisory an hour.

Here is a more detailed forecast for Bergen County this weekend, from the NWS.

Friday: Freezing rain before 5pm, then a chance of freezing rain and sleet. Steady temperature around 31. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. North wind around 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch possible. Little or no sleet accumulation expected.

Friday Night: A chance of freezing rain and sleet, mainly before 8pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 21. Wind chill values between 15 and 20. North wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50 percent.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 28. Wind chill values between 10 and 15. Northwest wind 9 to 15 mph.

Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 13. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light north after midnight.

Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 33.

Sunday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 18.
