Rumbles At Joint Base On Calendar Throughout May
Loud days are in store for the area, according to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst's May calendar. Here's what's coming:
MANCHESTER, NJ - Rocket fire, rotary cannons and even cratering charges may be heard from Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst this month due to noisy training, officials said.
According to the joint base’s monthly noise calendar, every day in May will feature at least “moderate noise,” save for May 19-21 and May 26, which are expected to see “high noise” levels, the joint base said.
High noise levels, which can be triggered by the use of heavy crew weapons and cratering munitions, can shake homes near the base and may cause rumbles heard for miles. Low cloud cover can prompt the sound to travel longer distances.

The high noise levels are generated when training involves firing mortars and Howitzers, as well as cratering explosives, the base said. The noise levels also can be affected by the location on the base where the firing range is in use.
Moderate noise is prompted by aerial gunnery, which may include rocket fire, rotary cannons and .50 caliber weapons, the base said.
