Officer Tischler: Above and Beyond for Marlboro

Marlboro Police Officer Mike Tischler said sometimes serving the community isn't just about being a cop.

Tischler, who has been on the Marlboro force since 1997 after turning down a job in corrections, in favor of working directly with the community. 

"Sometimes you go beyond your job. There are instances where I've unclogged toilets for crying elderly people who call 9-1-1 because they have no idea what to do," Tischler said. "You can't yell at them or say 'this isn't my job,' you just have to help."

Tischler was nominated by Councilman Lt. Col. Jeff Cantor on Marlboro-Colts Neck Patch's "Thank a Marlboro or Colts Neck First Responder" article, where Patch asked residents to let us know who our exceptional first responders are.

Cantor's original comment:

I nominate Marlboro Township Police Officer Mike Tischler. Mike is a dedicated officer that cares about the people of Marlboro. On a first aid call, Mike responded to a scene in which an elderly woman fell down in the bathroom and couldn't get up. There was a lot of feces and blood all over the woman and the floor of the bathroom. The woman had to get lifted onto the stretcher, so Mike stepped in, lifted her up by himself, and put her on the stretcher. Even though his uniform and shoes were soiled, he cared about the woman and put her needs first. He is a very dedicated officer and deserves to be recognized!

Tischler said the incident Cantor is referring to was rough, but he simply couldn't let the woman stay on the floor.

"Sometimes you have to do things normal people wouldn't do. I said, 'I can't let this lady fall no matter what she's covered in.'"
