MENDHAM, NJ — An open house and dedication ceremony for the township's new police headquarters will be held in May, officials said.

The new police station at 4 West Main Street opened several months ago, with all police personnel relocating from the previous station at 3 Cherry Lane, leaving the old building vacant.

The ceremony is planned for Saturday, May 6. The dedication will begin at 10 a.m. and the open house for the facility will continue through noon, police said.

J.R. Contracting and Environmental Consulting, the project's contractor, was tasked with constructing the new police station, which previously housed a split-level converted house.

The new police department building's parking lot is accessible from the municipal building parking lot, where police vehicles – as well as officers' personal vehicles – will be parked, as part of maintaining "the historic fabric of the Brookside Historic neighborhood," Sarah Neibart previously said.

Other authorized improvements in the renovation project include a major renovation of the nearly century-old Town Hall, which houses municipal offices and the library and requires a new roof, windows, boiler, and compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Progress is now being made on the future repurposing project of the now-vacant police station at 3 Cherry Lane in the township.

Mayor Nick Monaghan appointed former deputy mayor Tom Baio and committeewoman Amalia Duarte last fall to come up with ideas for repurposing the old police station building rather than demolishing it.

At the March 7 committee meeting, Duarte stated that she had been looking into the finances to possibly fund an interior renovation project to make the building more conducive to holding community events.

Duarte said she would meet with Monaghan in the coming weeks to discuss a more formal plan, which will then be shared with the community at a future meeting.
