Here's Who's Running For Middletown School Board This November

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — Nov. 5 will not only be the U.S. presidential election, but also local school board elections as well.

Last Monday, July 29 was the filing deadline for candidates to submit their names to run for school board.

For the Middletown Board of Education, here is who filed to run.

Voters will be asked to choose three:

• Deborah Wright: Current board member, longtime board member, seeks re-election. BOE seats are not political, but Wright is usually seen as the most liberal member of the Middletown school board. For example, she sided with the state in Gov. Murphy/AG Platkin's transgender battle with Middletown Board of Education, and she also voted against more aggressive COVID re-opening measures pushed by Board president Frank Capone and Jacqueline Tobacco during the pandemic, such as ending forced testing, mask requirements and quarantine times.
• Joan Minnuies: Current board member, longtime board member, seeks re-election
• Kate Farley, Today's Children First: Current Board member, newcomer to the board. Farley is a political ally of Tobacco/Capone and usually — but not always — votes the way they vote.
• Sara Weinstein: Today's Children First
• Mark Soporowski: Common Sense Education: Soporowski ran last year for Middletown Board of Education and received the fewest number of votes out of all the candidates who ran last November. (2,679, according to Patch vote totals on Election Night.)

For Middletown Township Committee, Mayor Tony Perry (Republican) seeks re-election, and he will be challenged by Democrat Mike Morris.
