Construction will now begin on Memorial Sloan Kettering’s 285,000-square-foot outpatient cancer treatment facility in Middletown, New Jersey. When doors open in late 2016 (anticipated), cancer patients from Monmouth, Middlesex, and Ocean counties and surrounding communities will have access to the most advanced cancer care under one roof. MSK physicians and nurses will provide services including chemotherapy, radiation therapy, diagnostic and interventional radiology, outpatient surgery, clinical research trials, oncology rehabilitation, social work services, nutritional counseling, and support programs will be offered.

MSK Monmouth will reduce the need and burden for most patients to travel into Manhattan by allowing them to receive care closer to where they live. Currently, more than 6 percent of MSK patients live in the areas that will be served by this state-of-the-art cancer care facility. Furthermore, the facility will help to address cancer incidence in the area, which is expected to grow by more than 17 percent over the next ten years.

The clinical portion will occupy approximately half of the building. The facility will also house a new data center, allowing MSK to relocate its current Manhattan data center to Middletown which will eventually become MSK’s primary production data center, with the existing Lyndhurst (NJ) data center becoming a backup location.

The data center will provide a centralized location for all of MSK’s information technology needs. Information technology plays a critical role in almost every aspect of patient care including entry of physician orders, storage of electronic medical records, supporting real time access to clinical data during surgery, and appointment scheduling. The center will also support MSK’s telecommunications needs.

Along with cancer care, MSK Monmouth will hopes to also bring economic gain to the northern area of the New Jersey shore. Approximately 160 salaried jobs will be created through its opening.

Space at MSK Monmouth is also being designed to accommodate local cancer support groups, community events, and educational programs for area healthcare professionals.
