School Bus Driver Killed In BurlCo Crash Was A Veteran, Retired Police Officer
As a bus driver, Jack Hohwald was a 'constant, reassuring presence' who greeted everyone with a smile. He was 85.
MAPLE SHADE, NJ — The Maple Shade school bus driver identified as the victim of a deadly crash was a veteran and retired police officer who left a legacy of kindness, according to those who knew Jack Hohwald.
Born in Merchantville, Hohwald was a lifetime area resident, according to his obituary. He served in the National Guard from 1961-68 before working as a Maple Shade police officer until 1995.
Hohwald, 85, had been a Maple Shade school bus driver for 23 years. He died Tuesday when a fellow bus driver struck him in the district's bus lot, police said.

Maple Shade Superintendent Beth Norcia remembers Hohwald as "more than just a school bus driver."
"He was a friend, a mentor, and a dedicated community member who touched the lives of so many students and staff each day," Norcia wrote to the school community. "For our students and staff, Jack was a constant, reassuring presence—a protector and a friend who took great pride in safely transporting our children to and from school each day."

As a bus driver, Hohwald greeted everyone with a smile, ensuring safety and comfort for every child, according to a statement from the Yocum Elementary School PTA.
"Jack touched so many lives with simple yet profound acts of kindness—an encouraging word, a cheerful greeting, and a reassuring presence that made every ride feel like home," the Yocum PTA said on social media. "The impact he had on our school community will never be forgotten."
Hohwald was an active member of American Legion Post #66, based in Maple Shade. He even served as the local chapter's past commander.
Class was canceled for all Maple Shade schools on Wednesday as the school community mourned. For the rest of the week, many students and staff are wearing blue and yellow — the colors of the American Legion and the school district.
The deadly crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been announced as of Thursday afternoon.
