8 Morristown Preservation Projects May Receive $915K In County Grants

Freeholders eyeing $2.7 million for 32 projects across the county.

Morristown, N.J. – Eight historic preservation projects that would cost more than $1 million may be fulfilled in the form of grants from the county’s Historic Preservation Trust Fund.

Morristown is home to some of the most costly projects under the recommended $2.7 million that would be spread across 32 construction and non-construction projects in 32 Morris County towns.

Included is a $268,360 grant for the South Street Presbyterian Church. As described by the county, the project is as follows:

  • The church includes an 1893 Romanesque Revival sanctuary and 1878 Parish House. The site is contributing to the Morristown Historic District and has a certificate of eligibility for listing on the New Jersey and National Registers. This grant will provide for slate roof replacement at the south side of the main roof and the large dormer.

Another big-ticket item in Morristown is the Moses Estey House. The project:

  • This Georgian and Colonial Revival house was built in 1786 by Captain Moses Estey, a veteran of the American Revolution. It originally stood at the corner of Spring and Water streets in Morristown and was relocated to the current site in 1969. The house is a contributing resource in the Speedwell Village National Register Historic District. The grant will provide for exterior rehabilitation and stabilization.

  • Church of the Assumption – Phase IIB Exterior Restoration, $144,760
  • Loyola Gate House – Construction Documents, $22,560
  • Macculloch Hall - Construction Documents, $25,368
  • Morristown Community Theater – Fire Escape, $49,274
  • Willow Hall – Construction Documents, $24,517

While the eight construction projects came with grant requests totaling $1,074,239, the recommended amounts (listed above) come to a total of $915,146.

The county board of freeholders will vote to approve the funds on July 13.
