Hours-Long Standoff With Morris County Police Ends

MORRISTOWN, NJ — A Morristown man surrendered late Wednesday afternoon following a five-hour standoff that began after police were called to conduct a welfare check.
According to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, their office was notified of a situation at a home on Hillairy Avenue by Martin Luther King Avenue in Morristown at 11 a.m.
Police said that they had been conducting a welfare check on the residence when they were informed that there was a potential explosive device in the building.

According to Meghan Knab, a spokesperson for the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, the subsequent response included various agencies such as the Prosecutor’s Crisis Negotiation Team, Morris County Sheriff’s Office ESU, Bomb Squad, Morris County Law & Public Safety, Morristown Police and Morristown Fire.
The police said that at no time was there any danger to the public.

By 4:30 p.m., the occupant of the home voluntarily surrendered himself and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Their identity has not been released by the police department, but officials said they were alone in the residence.
Responding officers then inspected the building, and no explosive devices were discovered.
Morristown police asked residents to avoid the area around Hillairy Avenue all day on Wednesday.
