Morristown Man To Wear A Record-Breaking Amount Of Underpants For Charity

The homelessness awareness advocate, formerly homeless himself, will attempt to break a Guinness World Record.

MORRISTOWN, NJ — A Morristown man will be attempting the Guinness World Record for most pairs of underwear worn at once, all for charity.

Jaii Xander is an up-and-coming streamer and homelessness awareness advocate who is looking to don quite a few pairs of undies in an effort to raise money for a local charity.

On Oct. 12, at 2 p.m., Xander will be in the center of the Morristown Green, putting on 300 pairs of underwear. The streamer is looking to beat the current record of 266, set by Steve Jacobs of Australia in 2012.

He is currently getting ready for the impressive feat, having acquired 300 pairs of underwear ranging from size small to size XXL.

Xander will be live-streaming the attempt on Twitch and YouTube, which will feature an active donation link. Cash donations will also be accepted during the world-record attempt. All donations will be given to the Morristown-based charity Market Street Mission.

His decision to put on 300 pairs of underpants isn’t random, though. This time last year, Xander was homeless. He found himself in heavy debt, working 13-hour shifts, sleeping in his car, and bouncing across hotel rooms when he could afford it.

For nearly a year, Xander was struggling to support himself, as well as his disabled mom and his sister. He has since gotten out of that situation and is looking to give a voice to those facing similar problems.

“Those eight to ten months were the roughest,” Xander said. “Now I just want to be able to be an advocate for people who are in my situation, and maybe help someone out of their situation by bringing awareness to this.”

Xander said that during that dark time of his life, getting laundry done and having clean clothes were something he wasn’t always able to do. That’s why he decided to break this record.

“While I was (homeless), having clean underwear was kind of essential. Not being able to do laundry because you’re focusing on lodging and meals, it goes on the back burner for a little bit,” Xander told Patch. “If I’m able to kind of connect the underwear and the clothes, to this record, it could really solidify the actual effect more. It’s a silly stunt, it’s a silly record, but I do think that it’s woven into my story… The underwear is simultaneously to spark interest, and also to interweave it into my own personal story, with clothes specifically.”

Xander said his decision to work with Market Street Mission came from a desire to stay local. He said he wanted to give back to his community, thinking a local charity would greatly benefit Morristown rather than a national non-profit.

While Xander would be thrilled with any amount of donations, his goal is $50,000. He said $50,000 would fund more than 20,000 meals. With Morristown having more than 200 unsheltered people, according to a HUD study, these funds would greatly benefit the community.

“I know what it feels like to feel like you literally have no options,” Xander said. “But a strong mindset told me to understand that when you’re going down a hill, you can use that same hill as momentum to go up the next one… I promise, you’re only down for a little bit, and then you’re up.”
