City to Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with Street Festival

Event will be held in the North Ward and will include entertainment, farmer's market and more

The city of Newark will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on Sunday, Sept. 29, by co-hosting the 6th Annual “Festival de la Familia Latina.” (Latino Family Festival) The festival will be held on Bloomfield Avenue between Lake Street and Clifton Avenue, in the North Ward, from noon to 6 p.m.

This year’s festival will offer a variety of activities including free health screenings, raffles, arts and crafts, inflatable bouncers, Zumba, and sports for children.  New for 2013, the festival will host a farmer’s market and offer healthy food demonstrations and tastings that will showcase fresh produce from Newark’s local farmers and gardens. DJ Lady C will serve as the event’s DJ with live musical performances by Afrocuba Band, Plena Dulce, Yahaya Kamate Drummers and others.

In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the annual festival celebrates Latino arts and culture with a wide array of fun family-oriented activities, and information from key community stakeholders in government, non-profit, and community organizations.

Community partners including Newark Museum, NJPAC, Newark YMCA, FOCUS, Essex County College, Just One Soccer, and many more, will host information tables and provide activities for families. The Newark Museum’s Generation Fit exhibit will present demonstrations and activities emphasizing nutrition and exercise, while Just One Soccer will provide soccer drills for children.
