Lanes Altered on I-78 for Construction

Work is part of ongoing repaving project.

Traffic lanes will temporarily rearranged along the eastbound side of Interstate 78 in Newark to accommodate ongoing highway repairs, the state Department of Transportation announced Friday.

The changes took effect Friday and will remain in place through mid-August.

Single and double-lane closures will be allowed during overnight and off-peak hours, but four lanes will remain open in both directions during peak hours.

A local lane between mileposts 55.3 and 56.7 will be closed and a temporary express lane will be added. This also means Exit 57 will only be accessible from the one local lane.

Exit 58, however, will continue to be accessible from two local lanes. Exit 58 provides access to the same destinations as Exit 57, including Rt. 1 & 9, Rt. 21 and Newark-Liberty International Airport.

The work is part of an ongoing, $72 million repaving project at one of the busiest stretches of highway in the state, with 145,000 vehicles traversing the area daily. The project is scheduled to be completed early next year.
