Man Rescued After Jumping into Passaic River

Police respond after man threatens suicide.

Newark police saved a suicidal man Monday who jumped into the Passaic River from the bridge on Bridge Street, department spokesman Sgt. Ron Glover said.

Officers responded to a call around 10:15 am that the 42-year-old man, whose name was not released, was on the span, threatening to jump. When officers arrived, he leapt into the water, Glover said.

Less than a mile downstream, the department’s boat, Marine 1, was taking part in an event at Riverfront Park to mark the start of the city’s “Super Summer” programs. The boat, which carried officers from the marine and emergency services units, responded to the area and rescued the man, Glover said.
