Pre-Ramadan Health Fair Held in Newark

Event held in preparation of Islamic holy month, which began this week.

More than 150 people took part in a pre-Ramadan health fair at New Jersey Medical School (now Rutgers New Jersey Medical School) in Newark last month. The event was co-hosted by University Hospital. 

Ramadan, the Islamic holy month, began this week and ends Aug. 7. Muslims who are in good health fast during daylight hours for the duration of the observance. The theme of this year’s annual fair ws “Health and Wellness for the Family in the 21st Century.”

Newark has a sizeable Islamic community.

The keynote speaker during the fair was Siraj Wahhaj, imam of Masjid-At-Taqwa in Brooklyn.

The free event, in its ninth year, featured health screenings, speakers, workshops and vendors. Topics included oral health, sickle cell anemia, adolescent obesity, mental health, bullying, hypertension, diabetes, eye diseases, cancer, special needs children, and fibroids.

Working with the Islamic Community Health Collaborative, which is comprised of representatives from the Council of Imams in New Jersey, Majlis Ash-Shura of New Jersey, and the National Islamic Association, University Hospital co-sponsors the Pre-Ramadan Health Fair annually for the Islamic community. Although the event is geared towards Muslims, people of all faiths are welcome to attend.
