Newark Hosts a Super Start to 'Super Summer'
Carnival at Riverfront Park Monday marks the kickoff for a wide array of offerings over the next few months.
City officials Monday officially kicked off “Super Summer,” an array of recreational and other programs offered during the warm-weather months, with an all-star lineup that included a Bear and a Giant, not to mention superheroes Wonder Woman and Batman.
“We’re letting folks know they don’t have to be sitting in the house. There’s plenty to do,” said LeVar Young, the executive director of Newark Now, which helps oversee Super Summer.
Young, Mayor Cory Booker and hundreds of others were at Riverfront Park for a small carnival that included mini-clinics given by members of the New York Red Bulls, tunes offered up by the Street Team from Hot 97 Radio, a bounce castle, raffles and free food.

“Super Summer” is a roundup of programs offered by the Newark Public Library, the city’s recreation department, the County of Essex and others. It includes a free, outdoor summer concert series hosted by the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, river tours taking off from Riverfront Park, junior academies offered by the Newark police and fire departments, arts programs and more.
Newark Now will pay the permit fees for neighborhood block parties held through August, Young also said.

Acting Council President Anibal Ramos commended Mayor Cory Booker for helping launch the initiative six years ago.
“I want to thank Mayor Booker. Back in 2007, he saw fit to put together a number of organizations to offer activities for family members and seniors,” Ramos said.
Other officials said giving youth something to do when school’s out can also help keep them out of danger at a time when crime tends to spike in the city.
“I want to thank God for all the partners who are making this program possible,” said Assemblyman Albert Couthino, who represents the East Ward in the state Legislature. “We cannot forget the sheriff’’s officers and police officers who keep our kids safe.”
“We’re not just having a good time, we’re keeping kids safe,” Couthino added.
Also among the guests Monday were Rupert, the Newark Bears mascot, and Andre Brown, the New York Giants running back.
Monday’s event was also a showcase of Brick City generosity. A local druggist, Bergen Street Pharmacy, was among the businesses that donated prizes for a free raffle.
When Bessie Williams won the pharmacy’s donated prize -- a bicycle -- she politely declined, requesting that it being given to a child instead. After a few more raffle drawings, the prize ended up with Isaac Tagoe, a very appreciative 5-year-old.For more information about Super Summer, visit Newark Now and then click "programs."
