NPD Fugitive Unit Arrests Two on Assault, Other Charges
Men allegedly threatened, assaulted woman who refused their sexual advances.

Early Friday morning at around 6:15 am the Newark Police Department's Fugitive Apprehension Section, along with detectives from the Major Crimes Section, officers from Emergency Response Unit and investigators from the Essex County Homicide Task Force, responded to 48 Pierce St. in search of 22 year-old Melvin Faines and 28 year-old Omar Faines, who were both wanted for committing a pointing/aggravated assault which occurred at 48 Pierce St. on Sept. 4.
Once at the location, the Emergency Response Team secured the residence and executed the search warrant. While securing the residence, perimeter detectives observed someone throwing out, from a second floor window, a handgun. That weapon was later secured and identified as a loaded silver Smith & Wesson .357 handgun, department spokesman Sgt. Ronald Glover said.
Both men were placed under arrest and charged with aggravated assault, conspiracy, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

The victim in this incident reported that while visiting the suspects at their residence she was physically assaulted and threatened with a gun when she refused their sexual advances.
"The collaborated work by the detectives involved in apprehending these suspects and removing another gun off our streets has to be commended. They work tirelessly in locating wanted individuals that are violent and have no regards for our law abiding citizens,” said Police Director Samuel A. DeMaio.
