Officials Identify Man, Teenager Killed Saturday in Newark

The man and a 16-year-old girl killed Saturday afternoon in Newark were identified Sunday, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office announced.

Newark resident Damien Matteaux, 23, and his cousin, Nyquese McCollum of Irvington, were found shot to death in a car near S.10th St. and 15th Avenue. The two were believed to be going to pick up Matteaux’s girlfriend at her job in Union when they were shot, Chief of Detectives Anthony Ambrose said.

Matteaux also appears to have been the intended target of the shooting, Ambrose also said, adding that law enforcement officials did not know the motive for the slayings as of Sunday afternoon.
