9-Year-Old Calls Police as Mom is Attacked in Newark

Woman was dragged into a basement on N. 7th Street before breaking free, police said.

A young boy Tuesday called police to report that his mother was being attacked, according to an account on CBS News.

The 27-year-old woman was walking near 234 N. 7th Street around 10 a.m. when she was accosted by an unknown man, who tried to drag her into a nearby basement, Newark police told CBS. The woman broke free, suffering minor injuries and torn clothing.

The woman’s 9-year-old son, meanwhile, called 911.

The Newark Police Department's sexual assault and rape analysis unit is in the "very early stages" of an investigation, department spokesman Det. Todd McClendon said in a statement. 

"Investigators will continue to conduct a thorough inquiry into the matter and examine the totality of the circumstances before drawing a final conclusion on the events of today," McClendon also said.
