District Accommodates Summer-School Students During Heat Wave

Parents, caregivers should also take precautions, district advises.

The Newark Public Schools have issued guidance for parents and caregivers whose children are attending summer school regarding the ongoing heat wave affecting the region.

Instruction and enrichment programs are taking place in air conditioned and cooler rooms, even where the school as a whole is not fitted with air conditioning and fans have been added to schools where there is no air conditioning.

Drinking water is being delivered to schools for staff and students.

Summer school programs with outdoor activities include water play activities and air conditioned spaces to which students can retreat.   

School nurses are on heightened alert for heat related symptoms.

Parents are being given tips so their children remain cool and healthy during the high temperatures, including:

  • Students should wear light-colored, loose-fitting appropriate clothing

  • Students should drink plenty of fluids to remain hydrated

  • Parents are advised to send proper medication to schools with students

  • District personnel have been closely monitoring the situation and conducting temperature checks at schools across the district.  Given projections for tomorrow the following steps will be taken:

    • Additional fans are being added to certain sites.

    • Technicians are on stand-by to deal with any A/C and power outages.
