West Ward Community Meeting, Booker Rival Opens Campaign HQ in Newark

Newark Police also hold scholarship ceremony in memory of fallen officers.

Here's what you need to know today:

Residents of the West Ward are invited to take part in a community meeting to discuss a plan to place an electrical switching station at the site of a former church, not far from the Georgia King Village residential complex. During a meeting in February with utility company PSEG officials, residents expressed concern over possible environmental and other impacts. The meeting will be held at the Boylan Rec Center, 916 South Orange Ave.

Sheila Oliver, the speaker of the state Assembly, today plans on opening her campaign headquarters in downtown Newark -- right in the backyard of her rival for the Democratic Senate nomination, Cory Booker. The headquarters will be located at 570 Broad St.

The Newark Police Department will host a ceremony to honor the recipients of the department’s memorial scholarship, awarded in memory of fallen Newark police. Among those scheduled to attend the ceremony at the Clinton Avenue headquarters are family members of police officers killed in the line of duty.

The summer fun continues at Riverbank Park, 21 Somme St., where the Summer Fun Weekly camp will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. The camp is open to kids aged 7 to 12.

A West Ward community meeting is scheduled for tonight at West Side High School, 403 South Orange Ave., beginning at 6 pm.
