Woman Who Allegedly Texted While Driving Faces Vehicular Homicide Charge

Elizabeth man was killed on Newark highway Oct. 10

A Rahway woman who police said was texting and driving was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of vehicular homicide in the death of a man in Newark earlier this month.

Jennifer Sahoye was driving southbound on Rt. 1 & 9 near Rt. 78 on Oct. 10 when she struck a Ford pickup being driven by Carlos Cavahlo of Elizabeth, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said. The 58-year-old Cavahlo, who was thrown from the truck, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said Sahoye was texting on her cell phone at the time of the accident.

She is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility on $50,000 bail. If convicted, Sahoye faces a maximum of 10 years in  prison.
