Young Newarker Taking Part in UN Conference on Education

Keynote speaker is Malala Yousafzai, who was shot by the Taliban for trying to go to school.

A recent graduate of Science Park High School will be taking part in a youth assembly being held at the United Nations in New York Friday.

Thais Marques, who graduated just a few weeks ago, will join hundreds of others for Malala Day, during which the young participants will spotlight the role adolescents can play in enabling all children to receive an education.

The highlight of the event will be a presentation by Malala Yousafzai, a Pakistani girl who was shot by the Taliban in 2012 for demanding that she and other girls be allowed to attend school. “Malala Day” is named for her and coincides with her 16th birthday tomorrow.
