Assemblyman Addresses River Clean Up, Flood Problems

Letter to the Editor from Assemblyman Timothy Eustace, District 38, on local flooding problems.

To the Editor:

On April 9 I had the opportunity to tour the Saddle River with the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission.

After several productive meetings over the winter to find ways to deal with flooding I had to go out and survey the river for myself to see where the biggest problem areas are located.

As we drove along the banks we could see several areas where debris has built up within the river and would need to be cleared in the near future.

The Passaic River Restoration Program has been surveying the Saddle River from Wallington to Ridgewood to identify these areas and over the next few weeks the debris will begin to be cleared from areas such as the Dunkerhook section between Paramus and Fair Lawn, and at bridge crossings in Rochelle Park, Saddle Brook and Lodi.

These bridge crossings can become the most flood prone areas along the Saddle River and clearing the debris can go a long way to preventing the banks from overflowing.

As the river is cleared over these next few months please don't hesitate to contact my office at AsmEustace@njleg.org if you see an area along the Saddle River, Passaic River or any brooks or streams that you feel needs to be cleared.

If we all keep our eyes open to potential hazards before they become a problem we will help to alleviate our flooding problems.
