Handyman Sentenced For 2019 Child Sex Assault In Bergen: Prosecutor

A Morris County man was convicted on charges he had sexually assaulted a child in 2019 in Demarest, prosecutors said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A handyman was convicted on 2019 charges of sexually assaulting a minor in Bergen County, according to authorities.

Alejandro Velasquez-Martinez — accused of sexually assaulting the child at her family's Demarest home while he was there doing tile repairs — was convicted Friday following a four-day trial in Bergen County Superior Court, authorities said.

Velasquez-Martinez faces at least 25 years in prison without parole for the alleged assault, which occurred in August 2019 and involved a child under the age of 13, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.

The Morristown man, who was 44 years old at the time of the incident, was convicted of aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child, and is scheduled for sentencing on Aug. 4, 2023, the prosecutor's office said.
