Man Assaulted Paramus Cop, Police Say

A 24-year-old Georgia man is facing a series of charges including aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

A Georgia man allegedly lied about his identity, led Paramus Police officers on a chase through residential backyards and assaulted a police officer early Monday morning, according to Lt. John Scully.

Officer Joseph Cullen was conducting a motor vehicle stop about 1 a.m. Monday, when police say they witnessed the vehicle's passenger, Phillip Watson, 24, of Newman, Ga., pour liquid that smelled like alcohol out of a container onto the ground.

Watson denied the act, gave the officer a fake name and then fled the vehicle on foot, passing through backyards of homes on Spring Valley Road and Prospect Street, Scully said. When cops caught up to him, Watson fought officers Cullen, Dan DeRienzo and Christopher Esposito until he was eventually handcuffed, cops said.

Watson is being held at Bergen County Jail on $15,000 bail after being charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and hindering apprehension, according to Scully.
