New Future Possible for Paramus 'Katrina House'

The borough has been looking to sell the house which got its name as it once housed a family displaced by Katrina.

"Katrina House" may have a new future as a wounded warriors home.

Mayor Richard LaBarbiera told council members Tuesday the Council on Affordable Housing is interested in purchasing the Farview Avenue home from the borough in order to develop it as a home for wounded warriors which he called "a noble cause."

The borough has been looking to sell the hose for some time. It went out for bid last year at an asking price around $400K but there were no takers.

The borough had purchased the house originally with the intent to move human services to the building or expand the senior center parking lot onto the property. Instead it was used a New Orleans family who was displaced after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

The borough has since determined there is no use for the building as obstaces had been encountered incuding the costs associated with trying to make the buiding ADA compliant.
