PARAMUS, NJ — New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy will put her walking shoes on this Saturday, joining the Center for Hope and Safety's "Walk Together Against Domestic Violence".

The 3K walk is scheduled for Saturday at Van Saun County Park, in Paramus, and begins at 10 a.m.

This walk is part of the organization's list of events during October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. A candlelight vigil was scheduled in early October, and a gala event will be hosted on Nov. 3, this year held virtually.

Events aimed at raising awareness for domestic violence are particularly timely in the era of COVID-19, officials with the Center for Hope and Safety said.

Calls to their hotline have increased by 46 percent during the pandemic, meaning representatives from the agency have answered more than 6,150 calls.

Pair COVID-19 with one of the biggest news stories in recent memory, and officials say this October is additionally meaningful.

"October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the impact of COVID-19 paired with the recent murder of Gabby Petito making headlines, has made the need for support and services for those experiencing domestic abuse more critical than ever," said Julye Myner, PhD, executive director of the Center for Hope and Safety.

"Gabby Petito’s death is a tragic reminder of how prevalent domestic violence is in our own communities and how hard it can be to identify. Together we are working to end domestic violence, to show solidarity with survivors and to raise funds for services that not only support victims, but also educate the community about domestic abuse and prevention to help break the cycle of violence."
