No Decisions Made Regarding Overnight Parking Allowance

Paramus governing body continues talks regarding what can be done to alleviate those who have outgrown their driveways and need to park their vehicles on the street.

The Paramus governing body's quest to find some relief for those residents who have no place to park their vehicles during the overnight restricted hours continues however officials said Tuesday no decisions have been made yet.

Residents have been speaking out in opposition of allowing overnight parking.

The permission would only be granted to those who can prove a hardship - number of licensed drivers exceeding the number of available space on the property. The borough has been considering establishing a permit that only residents who meet this criteria could obtain.

The issue drew a few members of the community to the work session to raise their concerns.

Mayor Richard LaBarbiera addressed resident Emil Kuldig who was concerned this would eliminate parking restrictions overnight entirely. By borough ordinance vehicles can not be parked on the street between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.

"It was never intended that we would do away with the ordinance," said LaBarbiera.

The mayor said the borough is not looking to change the overnight parking restrictions however if someone really needs to park on the street "we might entertain a vehicle in which they can get a permit based on their need."

LaBarbiera has said previously the permit would only apply to a small percentage of the community, likely 5 or 10 percent.

"The one thing we wanted to ensure is that this would not be a permit of convenience. If you had 5 drivers and 6 spaces – you wouldn’t be eligible for a permit," he explained.

Such a permit would likely have an annual cost of $120 and it would be issued to a specific vehicle.
