Mary Walsh, an alum of Paramus Catholic High School is off to serve in the Peace Corps departing for Cambodia this week.
Walsh, 24, a Waldwick resident, will begin training as a community health volunteer. She will live and work in a community to assist them in the most beneficial manner and further the Peace Corps’ mission, according to a statement from the northeast regional office.
After her years at Paramus Catholic, Walsh went on to study at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, Calif., where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 2011.
“I’ve been volunteering since I was 10, and the thought of going to another country to volunteer was even better,” said Walsh. “So throughout college I strengthened my volunteer background, and it just made me want to do it more. I went to Tanzania in 2009 with Support for International Change, and that just solidified it. I knew I was going to do it after that.”
Walsh will first live with a host family in Cambodia to become fully immersed in the country's language and culture. Later she will be sworn into service and be assigned to a community where she will live and work for two years with the local people.
